Colorado Cannabis Laws

Medical & Recreational Marijuana

Companies must be licensed by the state, as well as the local agencies (city and county) to start any medical or recreational marijuana businesses. Cities and counties can choose whether to license none or some business types (dispensary, cultivation, manufacturing, processing, transportation, etc.) Exporting marijuana to other states is currently illegal under state and federal laws.

On the state side, the medical and recreational marijuana programs are overseen by the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED).

CBD & Hemp

The Colorado Department of Agriculture is responsible for overseeing and issuing hemp cultivation licenses, while the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment deals with processing, manufacturing, and distribution of CBD products.

However, the county and city where the business will be located may also determine whether you can open and operate a business within their borders or not. You’ll need to look up and verify those details
yourself or with our help via a Starter Package.
